Nineteen winters. Over two thousand rooms full of strangers. And somehow, every single time, the same six minutes of silence right before the first "so, what do you do" breaks it wide open.

We've hosted 2,073 speed dating events in this city since 2007. That's not a marketing number, that's a spreadsheet we could show you. And after nearly two decades of watching Chicagoans size each other up across a table, we've picked up a few things the dating apps never will.

The number that actually means something

2,073 events. 16 to 40 daters each night. Do the math and you're somewhere north of 50,000 real, unscripted, face-to-face conversations, since 2007.

Compare that to a dating app's idea of a "conversation," a text thread that dies somewhere around message four. Ours happen in real time, with real eye contact, and no delete button. You can't ghost someone sitting across the table from you. You can only find out, in real time, whether there's actually something there.

This city doesn't need a warm-up act

Chicago will talk to a stranger on the Brown Line about literally anything. A Bears loss. A CTA delay. Whether Portillo's or Al's has the better Italian beef (there is a correct answer, and we're not touching that fight). This is a city that's already fluent in small talk with strangers, we just gave that instinct a table, a timer, and a reason to keep going past minute one.

January is when we find out who's serious

Here's the pattern that actually surprised us: our coldest-weather events, the ones where showing up means bundling up and trudging through actual Chicago winter, tend to produce our most focused, most engaged rooms of the year. Nobody wanders into a January speed dating night by accident. Everyone who's there made a decision, and that decision shows up in the conversation. Less small talk, more "okay, let's actually figure this out."

The one thing 2,073 events taught us that no algorithm can

Forget the résumé. Forget the perfectly lit profile photo. After nineteen years and thousands of rooms, the single biggest tell of a good match is embarrassingly simple: does this person ask a real follow-up question, or are they just waiting for their turn to talk?

That's it. That's the whole secret. We've watched it happen more times than we can count, the exact moment someone leans in and asks something that actually shows they were listening, and the entire table shifts.

You can't code that. You can't swipe your way into it. You have to be in the room.
